Professor Jeffrey M. Drazen has collaborated with and contributed to ERS on numerous projects. He is an active researcher in pulmonary medicine who defined the role of novel endogenous chemical agents in asthma, which led to four new licensed pharmaceuticals. As well as being the Editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Professor Drazen trains medical students at Harvard, works clinically in a large hospital, and continues to conduct his own research.

During the SARS outbreak in 2003 Professor Drazen promoted rapid posting of data such as fever curves and blood counts at the NEJM online. This rapid information sharing is critical in epidemics and now common practice.

By joining with leaders of other medical journals in the call for the mandatory registration of clinical trials, Professor Drazen has furthered the cause of information sharing which is critical to improving medical research and outcomes.

He has published over 500 papers, editorials, and review articles and edited six books. Professor Drazen has served on numerous editorial boards of high impact medical journals and received honorary degrees from the University of Ferrara and the University of Athens.

ERS President Professor Elisabeth Bel commented: "Professor Drazen has made an unmatched contribution to the prevention and clinical care of chronic airways diseases, in particular asthma, by explicitly linking basic pathogenetic mechanisms to the development of novel treatment options. His commitment to supporting and promoting information sharing in times of outbreak has helped to shape the way the scientific and clinical community responds to emergency. His role in the call for the mandatory registration of clinical trials has aided the restoration of trust in medical research. His dedication is evident in all areas of his work and we are proud to present him with this award."

The Presidential Award is presented by ERS to recognise an outstanding contribution to the strengthening of respiratory medicine worldwide.

Do not miss the lunchtime session, 'ERS/NEJM on the asthma-COPD overlap syndrome' chaired and introduced by Professor Drazen.
Professor Drazen will be presented with the ERS Presidential Award during the Opening Ceremony, on Saturday 26 September, 2015 from 17:45 in the Auditorium.
