Professor Philippe Delaval

Recognising a commitment to the care of patients with lung disorders and their contribution to research and training in this area. 

Born in 1950, Professor Philippe Delaval completed twelve months as a research fellow in thoracic diseases at the Mayo Clinic (USA) in 1980–1981, after his internship in thoracic diseases at the University Hospital of Rennes.

Between 1985 and 2009, he was the Head of the Thoracic Diseases Department of the University Hospital of Rennes.

Early in the 1980's he was deeply involved in an experimental programme called ECTS Erasmus, on behalf of Rennes.

Professor Delaval was a member of the Societas Europaea Pneumologia (SEP) from its establishment, and then a member of the European Respiratory Society from its beginnings in 1990. He was involved in the clinical section and specifically the care of orphan diseases, together with the French organisation GERMOP.

After his role as Dean of the medical school of the University of Rennes 1 from 2009–2013, he was elected President of the Société de Pneumologie de Langue Française (SPLF) in 2014 –2016.

As President of the SPLF, he worked together with Professors François Xavier Blanc and Anh-Tuan Dinh Xuan respectively: firstly, to bring together the Respiratory Society of French Spoken Countries to partner with ERS; and secondly, to support ERS in approaching the French authorities to make the organisation of the ERS Congress in Paris possible in 2018.
