Professor Michael Polkey

Recognising a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of COPD and who is currently pursuing an active research project in COPD.

Professor Michael Polkey is a chest physician with 25 years of experience at the Royal Brompton Hospital London, an international centre of excellence for patients with heart and lung disease. He serves on the lung failure team dealing with all aspects of advanced lung disease including home mechanical ventilation, weaning from invasive ventilation and rehabilitation. He is particularly expert in the management of patients with advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Since 2016 he has also been the Chest Physician for Skye & Lochaber in rural Scotland, a commitment to which he devotes 20% of his time.

He is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College and has acquired and directed several research grants. He has supervised, as primary or co-supervisor, 33 PhD/MD students.

He has published over 250 peer reviewed original scientific papers and24 book chapters. He is currently associate editor of Thorax, and is a previous associate editor of the European Respiratory Journal. Areas of investigation have included skeletal and respiratory muscle, mechanical ventilation, exercise performance, rehabilitation and physical activity.
