Professor Jodie Simpson

Recognising excellence in achievements in clinical research on airway diseases such as asthma and related conditions, or other respiratory diseases.
Professor Jodie Simpson is a Principal Researcher in the University of Newcastle's Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs, and the Deputy Head of the School of Medicine and Public Health, Faculty of Health and Medicine, at the University of Newcastle.

Jodie's work has significantly advanced the understanding of asthma, pathogenesis and therapeutic approaches. Since receiving her PhD on "Inflammatory Mechanisms in Non-Eosinophilic Asthma" in August 2005, Jodie has established a national and international research profile. Her research output exceeds her discipline peers (h-index 48; 8,371 citations; $8 million in competitive funding).

Jodie's current research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of inflammation in asthma and COPD, and specifically on the role of airway phagocytes and bacterial colonisation. This work is complemented by her research investigating macrolide antibiotics as an anti-inflammatory therapy in asthma and COPD.

She has forged new collaborations in investigating the airway microbiome in asthma. Jodie is a chief investigator on five national government funded project grants exploring various mechanisms of inflammation and infection in airways disease.

In 2018 she will continue to build her international collaborations working with Professor Liz Sapey from the University of Birmingham on neutrophil function in asthma.
  • The ERS Romain Pauwels Research Award grants €50,000 to encourage a new generation of lung scientists and to support young researchers in their quest to understand and treat respiratory illnesses. This prize is financially supported by GlaxoSmithKline.
