10,000 steps for Assembly 10

hlflcomposite

The theme for the Healthy Lungs for Life initiative this year is 'Take the Active Option'.

To celebrate the benefits of exercise for health and wellbeing, the ERS Infections Assembly (Assembly 10) will be running a competition at Congress. All delegates will be encouraged to take part in the effort to walk 10,000 steps a day (or even more...!) throughout Congress.

You can measure your steps using various apps available for mobile devices or, if you are quick, you can get one of our limited edition Healthy Lungs for Life pedometers at the stand in the World Village.

A list of the delegates achieving the most steps each day will be posted on this page.

How to enter 10,000 steps for Assembly 10

  • Track your steps each day using an app on your mobile device or one of the Healthy Lungs for Life pedometers at the stand in the World Village.
  • Bring your phone or pedometer to the Healthy Lungs for Life stand in the World Village to show us your step count
  • Tweet us photos of your step count using #ERS10Ksteps
  • Email your photos to: sylvia.kruiniger@europeanlung.org
  • Add photos of your step count to the Healthy Lungs for Life Facebook group

 Why Take the Active Option?

  • Moderate physical activity benefits your immune system
  • If you are healthy, a single exercise session activates immune cells, produces immune modulatory peptides, leukocytosis and enhances your immune cell functions
  • Regular, moderate exercise has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and it is even associated with reduced disease incidence and viral infection susceptibility
  • Regular exercise benefits your pulmonary function, capacity to exercise, muscle strength, quality of life, morbidity and mortality
  • There are specific exercise programmes that can be used to modify the course of chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases such as cystic fibrosis
