ERS Gold Medal in COPD

This award recognises a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of COPD and who is currently pursuing an active research project in COPD.

 

MeiLan K. Han (MD, MS) is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Michigan (UM). After graduating with her MD from the University of Washington, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine, Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care and MS in Biostatistics at UM.

She belongs to numerous professional societies including the ATS and ERS. She is also an associate editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and serves on the editorial boards for Thorax and Lancet Respiratory Medicine.She serves as a Scientific Advisory Committee member to the COPD Foundation and the American Lung Association.

Dr Han's research interests include defining disease phenotypes in COPD, in particular through radiologic characterisation of disease. She is a co-Principal Investigator on two NIH funded R01 awards as well as on a NIH funded therapeutic clinical trial in early COPD (RETHINC). She is also PI at the UM for the COPDGene study and SPIROMICS, which are both large NHLBI funded COPD cohort studies, and at the American Lung Association Research Network focused on airways disease.

Dr Han was also recently elected to the highly prestigious honour society, the American Society of Clinical Investigation.

The ERS Gold Medal in COPD grants €50,000 to a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of COPD. This prize is financially supported by Boehringer Ingelheim.
