ERS Assembly Lifetime Achievement Awards

The Ceremony for the Assembly Lifetime Achievement Awards will take place during the Opening Session, which is scheduled on Saturday 9 September, 2017 from 17:45 in Room Gold (South). 

Robert Loddenkemper

Presented to: Prof. Dr Robert Loddenkemper

The focus of Robert Loddenkemper's clinical and scientific activity was oncology (bronchial carcinoma, pleural mesothelioma) and endoscopy, especially thoracoscopy, as well as pleural disorders and interstitial pulmonary diseases such as sarcoidosis, histiocytosis X and IPF.

 

He made a further scientific contribution to the fight against tuberculosis worldwide as Secretary General of the German Central Committee against Tuberculosis (DZK). He was also significantly involved in tobacco prevention in Germany via the German Smoke-Free Alliance (ABNR). He has initiated, contributed to and published more than 120 international studies in the aforementioned subject areas.

Robert Loddenkemper was one of the leading lung specialists in Germany and has upheld an international reputation due to his various positions and functions in domestic and foreign organisations, such as Chair of the Adult HERMES Task Force and Chief Editor of the first European Lung White Book.

In 1998/99 he was President of the European Respiratory Society.

Erika Von Mutius

Presented to: Dr Erika Von Mutius

Erika von Mutius was born in 1957. She studied Medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), Munich from 1976 to 1984, and has been a paediatric specialist since 1992.

  After fulfilling habilitation requirements in 1998, she spent a research fellowship with Fernando Martinez in Tucson, Arizona, USA and subsequently earned a Master of Science Degree in epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health in 2000. She became Professor of Paediatric Allergology at LMU in 2004. She is Head of the Department for Asthma and Allergy at the Dr von Hauner Children's Hospital at LMU and is on the Board of Directors of the German Center for Lung Research.

Her more recent research has been devoted to studying why children raised on farms have lower rates of asthma and allergies. As a co-coordinator of the EU-funded project GABRIEL, von Mutius also helped to identify a genetic variant associated with increased risk of asthma.

She was granted an ERC advanced grant in 2010 titled "Host-environment interactions in the protection from asthma and allergies (HERA)" and received various awards and distinctions such as the Leibniz award of the German Research Council. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Johannes de Jongste

Presented to: Prof. Dr Johannes de Jongste

Johan de Jongste is Professor of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Director of the Paediatric Chest Center at Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam.

 

Alongside his clinical practice, his scientific work focused on childhood asthma pathophysiology, and treatment and biomarkers of airway inflammation. Presently, he is PI of the asthma and allergy group within the 'Generation R' birth cohort study. He (co)authored over 400 peer-reviewed international scientific papers (h-factor 62) and edited and contributed chapters to many textbooks.

He was an editorial board member of several high-ranking respiratory journals, and European Editor of Paediatric Pulmonology. He participated in many ERS/ATS taskforces including the 'Paediatric Harmonized Education in Respiratory Medicine for European Specialists' (HERMES), contributed to the ERS handbook on Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and was involved in the associated European exams.

He co-edited the European Respiratory Society Monograph on Exhaled Biomarkers (2010), and teaches paediatric respiratory medicine to medical students, fellows, specialists and nurses in the Netherlands and abroad.

Dr Jongste has also been involved in ERS school courses and presented numerous invited lectures at annual congresses and postgraduate courses of scientific organisations, including the ERS and EAACI. He is crown member of the Netherlands Health Council. He has also been a member of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Science Board since 2010.
